Educational Rules (Milano Bovisa) - Educational Rules (Piacenza)

Course summary

During the first year, students receive solid training in basic and preliminary disciplines, while in the second year the focus is on training more specific to Engineering in the cornerstone disciplines of Mechanical Engineering. In the third year, students choose from among different previously approved study plans (PSPA), through which they will complete their technical training.
The study plan for the first and second year at both the Milano Bovisa and Piacenza Campuses is the same; students at both campuses therefore receive common training.
In the third year, the study plan for students enrolled in the "Preparatory" track (for the Laurea Magistrale) is also the same at both campuses. However, the "Professional" tracks are differentiated: some of the study plans are only available at the Milano Bovisa Campus, while another is only available at the Piacenza Campus.

Educational mission and goals

The mission and goals of the programme is to train engineers able to handle the planning, production and management of products, technological processes and industrial systems.
During the first two years of the programme, students receive a solid technical and scientific foundation as well as economic and applicative skills. This training is completed in the third year of the Laurea programme and, then, during the Laurea Magistrale programme, with the deepening of more specialised knowledge.
During the programme, students acquire excellent technical training in the fields of applied mechanics and machine design, energy transformation, construction materials, fluid mechanics, the basics of industrial automation and the production and management of the whole life cycle. Upon completion of this training, graduates are university-trained technicians able to develop projects and manage established industrial procedures that do not require complex or innovative engineering skills. They are professionals able to work in the areas of both planning and production.

The first and second year

At both the Milano Bovisa and Piacenza Campuses, the same study plan is followed in the first and second year. During the first year, students receive a solid foundation in the preliminary and basic disciplines (mathematics, physics and chemistry). However, already in the first year, the study plan also includes more specifically engineering disciplines, which are then more fully developed in the second year and part of the third year, through study of the cornerstones of Mechanical Engineering (Applied Mechanics, Machine Construction, Mechanical Technologies, Materials, Methods of Technical Representation, Mechanical and Thermal Measurements, etc.).

Third year

In the third year, students choose from among different study tracks, completing their technical training through dedicated courses.
At both the Milano Bovisa and Piacenza Campuses, the "Preparatory"* track for the Laurea Magistrale is the same; students at both campuses therefore attend the same study plan courses. Students on this track receive training that permits them to enter the Laurea Magistrale programme in Mechanical Engineering - Ingegneria Meccanica directly.

The "Professional" tracks are differentiated instead: some tracks are offered only at the Milano Bovisa campus and one is only available at the Piacenza campus.
The third year of the Laurea programme is extremely flexible: students choosing to enrol in a "Professional" track third year may spend their first two years at either of the two campuses, then switching to the other campus if necessary for just the third year in order to pursue their chosen "Professional" track. All of the "Professional" tracks include a compulsory traineeship, which is to be carried out at a company.

*Starting in academic year 2014/2015, students may access the "Preparatory" study plan if they have an average greater than or equal to 24/30 out of at least 95 ECTS; an average greater than or equal to 23.5/30 out of at least 100 recorded ECTS; an average greater than or equal to 23/30 out of at least 105 recorded ECTS.
